Charlotte – The defending three time WBCBL (Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League) Regional Champion Charlotte Invasion (1-0) opened the season in dominating fashion Saturday afternoon at Charlotte Latin with an impressive victory over the Bisons of Beaufort,SC (0-1), 83-55. The semi-pro women’s team put on an exciting show for the home fans as they swarmed the Bisons defensively through four quarters of play. Electric point guard Kendria Holmes had a game leading 20 points as the Invasion attacked on defense with full court pressure all game long, causing an array of turnovers for Buford in which they could not overcome.
Sprinkling in some precise ball movement on offense, the Invasion opened the game up with an 18-0 run and never looked back. “We really just wanted to start off fast,” says the former Charlotte 49er point guard. “We know we are always the undersized team, so we like to fly around the court and get as many steals as we can to keep up the tempo.”
When asked about the team’s cohesiveness on the court, Holmes contributed the feat to great team chemistry. “Alot of us have played together for the last 7 to 8 years due to our time at UNC Charlotte. We have really stuck together and we just play well together.”
Holmes was apart of the 2007 Big East All-Freshman team after posting impressive numbers at Providence College before transferring back home to Charlotte to play for the 49ers in her final two years of eligibility.
The Invasion will continue in their quest to obtain their second national title in four years next week as they host the Carolina Lady Rush at Phillip O’Berry High School at 2pm.
